So here I am in 2013... happy as can be to be doing a Sunday radio show...
So here I am in 1977... happy as can be to be doing a Sunday radio show...
The only thing is that in '77 the songs were new or recent, and now I'm playing them as 43 to 33 year old 'oldies' !
They say life goes in cycles, and that is true for me, only in '77 I was on 'Trent 301' as the jingles sang then, whereas now they proclaim 'Trent Sound' !
I loved radio from even earlier than the 1970s - I began listening to pirate stations from the North Sea in 1964. Inspired by them, after an apprenticeship on hospital and university radio in Wales, I was one of the original team at Metro Radio in Newcastle Upon Tyne, then spent the summer of 1976 at Piccadilly Radio Manchester before landing in 'my' special place, Nottingham in 1977. And amazingly my radio career here was to last seventeen years.
I would have been quite happy to stay on the morning show throughout that stay, but a promotion to be Head of Music in 1978, and shortly after 'Head of Programmes and Music' meant I was privileged to programme the music we played for Nottingham for 16 years. This is why I feel I can safely say I 'understand' the 1970s well, and it's that reason I feel happy to present Seventies Sunday every week here on Trent Sound.
Back then we did not just play the Top 30 (as most large stations do now). I chose to actively avoid certain songs that were large hits as it was clear they were mainly bought by under 15 year olds. We wanted to appeal to an audience of all ages. On top of that , even in the late 70s it was possible to get to the top of the British charts with sales as few as 60,000 to 100,000 singles. This is why the music I play on Seventies Sunday is focused. It has 'stood the test of time', and mature ears. And by sprinkling in a few tracks from albums we played on the station back then, it's credible.
"Radio Like It Used To Be' as my jingles say; and as radio does not reveal wrinkles - I hope my voice will carry you straight back to those magical years from 1970 to 1979....
The one thing that has not changed is that it is radio that is Fun! And you can 'join in' by 'liking' Trent Sound on Facebook, where I also have a page, so do keep an eye on it - we have surprises and nostalgia from time to time...
I hope you can join me on Sunday at 10am.
